The Return of the Elk | November 2026
Tucked deep within the Great Smoky Mountains of western North Carolina, Cataloochee Valley is a place shaped by those who have called it home and by those who have returned.
This collection follows the history woven through the valley, from the families who settled among these mountains and built lives there to the elk that once roamed the Southern Appalachians before disappearing from the region. Nearly two centuries later, elk were reintroduced to Cataloochee, and today their return has become part of the valley’s continuing story.
Through correspondence and original artwork, The Return of the Elk wanders through an autumnal Smokies landscape of changing leaves, weathered homesteads, and the silhouette of elk emerging through the morning mist.
